Built in 1303, the church received a licence to crenellate - in other words permission to fortify - in 1304. This was common, and necessary, in the early 14th century during the wars of the time when King Edward I was trying to conquer Scotland. After King Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, the church lay disused until 1844, when it was restored at the instance or Sarah Losh. It was further altered in 1894.
