The brick building with its row of arches on the side wall and twin towers facing the River Thames was opened in 1866. Apart from these outer features, the building was redeveloped several times, the most recent incarnation dating back to 2007. Trains from Cannon Street are generally suburban services covering the south-eastern parts of Greater London. The ridge of low hills on the horizon are the North Downs.
