It looks as though this hazel had been coppiced at some time in the past and that the new shoots had grown to such a size that they collapsed outwards. The tree was not in a wood and may therefore have been a cultivated clone grown more for its nuts than its wood. There are snowdrops on the ground to the right of the tree.
