In 1904 the National Telephone Company opened a House Exchange Call Office at Pear Tree Cottage. The premises backed on to the rear of the Post Office at No.68 Church Street: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5581130 The two buildings set back from the road, presently occupied by The Gym, Nos.1 & 1A College Street, and Betfred, No.3 College Street, may well be part and parcel of the original cottage, though somewhat altered. At right is a fruiting pear tree, perhaps the same one shown in a photograph of 1908.
