Grade II Listed public house of about 1835 with late 19th century inn front. The name reportedly recalls the Battle of Sole Bay fought off Southwold in 1672, part of an on-going war with the Netherlands over trade and naval superiority. A search of my directories produced; 1839 & 1855 a number of beer retailers but Sole Bay is not listed as an inn or tavern; 1869 unable to locate; 1891 Mrs Maria Powditch, beerhouse, East Green; 1892 Mrs Maria Powditch, Sole Bay Inn; 1900-1912 James Brightmer Powditch. It seems it became an inn in 1891-92 having been just a beerhouse until then.
