The odd shape of the pool derives from the fact that that the original pool was simply a section of the River Witham dammed to create a bathing place in 1886, the first creation of recreational facilities on the site. It was modernised in the late 1920s, converted into a skate park in the 1970s and subsequently became the home of the Grantham model boat club, although this use is also defunct.
