Harnett's father was Falkiner Minchin Harnett, who was District Inspector of the Royal Irish Constabulary at Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was educated at the University of Durham and ordained in 1903. He came to Empshott in 1915 after curacies at Oldswinford, Southampton and Bournemouth. He married Caroline Elise Blunt, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Grant Blunt and Rachel Eliza Pile, on 2 September 1919. In 1924 he left to become Vicar of Hatherden
