Skipper Thomas Crisp was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the defence of his vessel, His Majesty's Smack Nelson, in the North Sea against an attack from a German submarine. He is buried here with his wife who died the previous month. The grave is in a neglected part of the cemetery and the 100th anniversary of his death is in less than 12 months.
