A Gothic Edwardian building, originally known as Rowton House Hostel in honour of the philanthropist Lord Rowton (Montagu William Lowry-Corry), and dating from 1903-05 when it was built to house mainly Irish workers in Birmingham. Six such hostels were built in London; this one is the only known Rowton House outside London, although similar establishments were built in Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle upon Tyne. For the princely sum of one shilling (per week) a man had the use of his own cubicle/room, wash facilities and a dining hall, with a variety of other services such as shops, tailoring, a barber's stall etc on the site.
