Butter Cross, Swaffham

The Butter Cross was given to the town in 1783 by George Walpole, 3rd Earl of Orford. It became the collection point for butter (Cambridge butter) from local farms to be sent to London for sale; hence the name. The statue is of Ceres, Roman goddess of corn and agriculture.
