Set back from the north side of the main road through Whitebrook, a small village at the eastern edge of Monmouthshire. The chimney was built as a part of the introduction of steam power to the nearby Clearwater Mill (now in ruins). The mill, built c1760, was the first paper mill in the Whitebrook valley and was worked for more than a century. The mill closed down in the 1870s. The chimney was Grade II Listed in 2001 as a well-preserved mid 19th century mill chimney, an important relic of the Whitebrook valley paper industry.
