This is part of the old railway running north from Exchange Station (closed 1977). The line on the left in the background is still in use and carries the Metro Northern Line. The blank end wall is Little Howard Street, of which there is a 1928 photo in the National Trust Hardman archive http://www.mersey-gateway.org/server.php?show=conMediaFile.25108
