Poole's Cavern, Buxton

A 2 million year old natural limestone cave which is a site of special scientific interest. The name derives from an outlaw, Poole, who reputedly used the cave as a lair in the 15th century. It was officially opened as a show cave in 1853 and in 1859 a system of gas lamps was installed. The cave closed in 1965 and reopened in 1976.
