The Market Square is dominated by the market cross and the Blue Bell hotel. Both are reminders of Belford's prosperous past as a coaching stop on the Great North Road and, from the 18th century, a market town. It is a sleepy place now, with a population of about 1,000, by-passed by the A1 since 1983.
