The tree which is one roped-off is believed to be the one (or at least a survivor from the same rootstock) where Newton is said to have observed the falling apples - leading to the formulation of his theories (and later law) of universal gravitation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Isaac_Newton#Apple_incident .
