The outer Tidal Basin in Bridgwater is lined with a number of these iron sluice gates. The canal was entered from the River Parrett at high tide and passed into the Tidal Basin, whereafter another lock separated it from the non-tidal canal. The sluiced flushed out the silt brought in from the Parrett.
