One of the city's grandest Classical buildings, built in 1851-53 to the designs of Lockwood & Mawson who won the building competition. Corinthian portico and attached Corinthian columns round the corner. Some of the detail debased Victorian, which renders it considerably inferior to its eponymous relation in Liverpool (Image]) Grade II* listed. Built as a public hall and still in use as a concert hall.
