This inn is named after Sir Harry Smith, a military commander from Whittlesey, who became known as the Hero of Aliwal following victory in a battle at Aliwal in India, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Aliwal Probably the only pub in the UK with this name? This pub is on the circuit of the straw bear during The Straw Bear Festival each January. Update March 2016 - Graham Martin of Whittlesey contacted me to say he re-painted the sign in 1999, keeping to the style of the old sign. In 1963 he was a student of the Sir Harry Smith College which was named after General Sir Harry Smith The original painting on canvas can be seen here http://media.geograph.org.uk/view.php?id=1103
