This station was opened by the Midland Railway in 1868 and rebuilt by the London Midland & Scottish Railway in 1937. In 2009 it was deemed to be one of the ten worst Category B stations in the country and since then work on upgrading the facilities there has been carried out. The building behind is the station car park which opened in 2011.
