Standing just in front of the wall on the North Bailey is a rather poor example of one of Joseph Edmund Webb's Patent Sewer Gas Destructor street lights. The lamp was supplied by town gas to keep it alight, and methane gas and other noxious vapours from the sewers came up the column, and burnt away in the gas flame. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sewer_gas_destructor_lamp In the background is Durham Cathedral.
