The following is from the 'Town and Country Trail leaflet', available for a nominal charge from within the pictured building: 'The cruciform building in the centre of Padgepool Place has a long history: it was built in 1839 as the Glendale Union Workhouse, housed 70 of the poorest people of the region and included a school and a hospital. Later it became HQ for the local council and housed the town mortuary. Since then it has been a museum, a field centre and stood empty for some years. In the year 2000 funding from many sources [came] together to allow the renovation and conversion of the building (by the Glendale Gateway Trust) into a multi-purpose centre for local people and visitors alike. It [houses] the Library, Tourist Information, Community Hall, exhibitions and much more. Its continued use now seems assured well into the future.'
