Whitburn was originally part of the parish of Livingston, but it was disjoined and erected into a separate parish in 1731. This kirk was built between 1729 and 1731 on the site of an earlier building. It was damaged by fire in 1955 but was restored and in use again in 1959. It is now the South Parish Kirk but it is the original and senior kirk in the parish.
