This skipper was clearly not a student of Linnaean taxonomy as it had refused to neatly comply with human classification. The tips of the antennae of a Small Skipper Thymelicus sylvestris should be distinctly orange while the antennae of the Essex Skipper Image should look as if they had been dipped in black ink. You can see that this example on the linked photo had a tiny dot of orange on its substantially black antennae. Members of the Butterfly Conservancy http://www.butterfly-conservation.org/ who were leading today's expedition on Image could not make a positive identification. The reserve is managed by the Friends of Tiptree Heath http://www.tiptreeheath.co.uk/ and the Essex Wildlife Trust http://www.essexwt.org.uk/visitor_centres__nature_reserves/tiptree_heath/
