This newish car park is clad in weathering steel. The steel composition is formulated to provide a stable rust coating to develop. This layer provides a passive layer and prevents water and oxygen from reaching the steel surface. As can be seen some areas have not yet corroded to a stable state. Areas sheltered from the rain by the station footbridge have not coloured yet. The cost of weathering steel is higher than normal steel but there are savings on painting and future maintenance costs. It has become popular for bridges but is unusual for buildings.
