It is a rare event these days when the park of St Giles House is open to the public, the occasion being the Grand Shaftesbury Run, an annual event hosted by the Earl of Shaftesbury in aid of charity. St Giles House has been the ancestral home of the Ashley-Cooper family - later the Earls of Shaftesbury, since the mid-C17. The house today is in a very sorry state that is not at all apparent in this distant view. A victim of the particularly difficult post-war years for large country house owners, it has remained largely uninhabited for over 60 years. Happier times for this grand Grade I listed building however may now be around the corner, as the present earl has committed himself to restoring the house and the estate to its former glory.
