Ty Derwen is the head office of GAVO (Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations). GAVO provides support and advice for community and voluntary groups as well as individuals who are interested in helping and supporting their community. GAVO also offers support to charities and those wishing to set up social enterprises. Formerly known as Barnardtown or Church Road school(s), the buildings date from c1880 when they were erected as Board schools (boys, girls and infants). The Elementary Education Act of 1870 required the provision of a school place for every child aged from 5 to 12. Locally elected committees (School Boards) were empowered to build additional schools if needed. These schools were known as Board schools.
