There has been a crossing point of the River Thames here since the 12th century, linking Windelsora (Windsor) to Eton on the north bank. The current bridge was built in 1822, designed by Charles Hollis and built by Thomas Telford. It was pedestrianised in 1970. On this buttress is the town crest of Windsor.
