Sand and gravel dug from the heath for road surfacing and sandbags for protection from First World War bombs created a pit which has exposed an important geological feature. The pit is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest because it shows layers of beach gravels and sand deposited from a sea which existed some 2.6 million years ago.
