A view of the 'modernisation'. Originally there would have been no governor but around the 1800s this technology was added to save the miller time. The governor (bottom right) was spun via a shaft connected to the shaft upstairs. This meant the governor spin reflected the speed of the mill. The centrifugal effect of the balls moved the 'iron yard' up or down and thus the tentering beam (white bar in this photo). So the small adjustments reflected the distance between the stones, maintaining the coarseness of the flour.
