Looking north along one of the rides radiating from this point through Stowe Woods (this one is directly in line with the Wolfe Monument in the opposite direction). The avenues were created in the sixteenth century to cut through the Whittlewood Forest ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whittlewood_Forest ). I was expecting something of note at the centre point, but it is just a lush grassy area.
