The canopy covers the bus station on the forecourt of London Bridge railway station. However, major redevelopment work is taking place at the station, as part of the "Thameslink Programme". This project will upgrade the cross-London railway route linking London Bridge with St Pancras, enabling more trains (and longer trains) to cross the city centre from south to north. The bus station canopy is due to be demolished in March 2011. In the background, building work is taking place on "The Shard". When completed, this will be the tallest building in the European Union, although it will not be as tall as one in Moscow.
