The north side of Jordan Well is mainly occupied by the Herbert art gallery and museum on the wall of which is the artwork "Man's Struggle" by Walter Ritchie (1959). Beyond the Herbert is the frontage and clock tower of the Council House and its metal covered 'trunk' - a bridge communicating with other council buildings on the opposite side of Earl Street. In the background is the spire of St Michael's cathedral.
