Until the mid 1970's, it was common to see large vans attempting to negotiate this narrow bridge by partly mounting the narrow kerb. In the late 1970s, the first of a series of different bollards was constructed in an attempt to restrict traffic crossing the bridge to vehicles not much larger than a family car.
