Known as the ‘Grand Entrance’, the portico has eight massive pillars in the Doric style which stand at the top of two low flights of steps. The brass cannon, of which there are six, come from the battle of Waterloo and were presented by the Prince Regent, later King George IV. The ironwork lamp holders are ornamented by lion’s heads and claws http://www.churchill-society-london.org.uk/Shst3Hist.html See the front aspect of this great building which was completed in 1812 at the height of the Napoleonic wars with France Image It was a year celebrated by Tchaikovsky in his 1812 Overture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2W1Wi2U9sQ
