Formerly Churchwallgate says the street nameplate at the top. It's a steep climb from the railway station to Market Place and home to several estate agents. On the wall above the A-board are two commemorative stones. The upper one reads: This Street / was widened and improved / AD 1818 / Rowland Gould, Mayor. The stone below it records: This Street / was further widened / 1939 / Harry Edward Mowbray / Mayor.
