This photograph shows the first phase of the School which was opened in 1963 as a secondary-modern school. In 1969 it became a 'High School' under what was known as the 'Thameside Scheme' whereby the most able children were selected for local grammar schools at the end of 'Year 8'. Following further reorganisation, it became an Upper School taking pupils from 13-18 with a primary and a 'middle' school both situated further along the Main Road. In the early 1990s it became known as Axtane Chase School and subsequently became an '11-18' school with a wide ability intake. As a result of further reorganisation, the school became an 'Academy' in 2009. The building photographed is due to be demolished with the opening of new buildings currently (August 2010) under construction.
