Commemorated here among his brothers at arms is Captain John Leslie Green V.C. Born in Buckden he was enlisted into the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1914 before completing his medical training. On 1st July 1916 at the age of twenty-seven and when advancing in the rear of his battalion in an assault on the enemy's trenches he came across a seriously wounded officer. Whilst under fire, he moved him to a shell hole where he dressed the wound. Wounded himself by now he carried the officer 200 yards back towards the British lines. Sadly just before reaching safety his brother officer was hit again. Captain Green began to dress this wound but was then shot in the head himself. Greater love hath no man ...........
