The Phoenix Hotel and Restaurant situated on the historic North Brink in Wisbech was completely gutted by a fire which started just after midnight on Thursday 29th April 2010. Formerly known as The White Hart and more recently as The Phoenix, this building is part of one of the finest pieces of Georgian street architecture in the country - but will it rise from the ashes? The front facade facing the river has been stabilised by local demolition contractor David Humphrey & Son who must think Christmas has come early for them having worked on 3 major fire sites in the area already this year, firstly St Mary's Church, Westry near March, then Constantine House in Wisbech and now The Phoenix. Standing on the town bridge in Wisbech one could be mistaken for thinking it was the middle of a war zone with these two major landmarks now nothing but burned out shells.
