The name Diphwys Station occurs on the 1888-1889 OS map, but the station's name was corrupted at a later date by the railway company to Duffws. "Diphwys", and its modern spelling "Diffwys", means "a precipice" and was the name of part of the mountain side above the station and also of the large slate quarry which was developed there and which was linked to Diphwys Station by a spectacular incline. The word "Duffws" has no meaning in either Welsh or English. http://www.festipedia.org.uk/w/index.php/Duffws
