The London & North Western Railway (LNWR) opened its Wigan to Manchester line via Atherton and Tyldesley in 1864. The line closed in sections between 1969 and 1975. A short section of the branch around Leigh (1885-1969) was retained to allow rail access to Bickershaw Colliery with this branch eventually closing in 1993. This view shows a bridge over the spur from "Hindley Field Junction" connecting the Leigh branch to the Manchester route. This spur closed in 1944.
