The section of the A281 between the A23 at Pyecombe and the crossroads north of Poynings. The road was only laid out at the beginning of the 19th century when the section of the modern A23 between Muddleswood and Pyecombe Street was turnpiked enabling a link between two London-Brighton coaching routes, the other being the older route over the Dyke.
