The power lines are fed by cables from Fawley Transmission Tunnel. The fenced area is the entrance to the Fawley Tunnel, a 4 metre diameter concrete and cast iron ring lined tunnel, constructed in the 1960's. The tunnel is used only for connecting the overhead power lines in the background with Fawley Power Station, on the far side of Southampton Water.
