Looking towards the junction with River Street and Greyfriars. The building with the dome was originally known as The Bedford Pantechnicon, and housed the furniture shop of Longhurst and Skinner (an advert from 1906 can be found on the Waymarking.com website http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM6E17_Longhurst_and_Skinner_Midland_Road_Bedford_UK_1906 ) Longhurst and Skinner was founded by Harry Longhurst, whose son Henry Longhurst (1909-1978) was a famous golfer and golf writer - see Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Longhurst
