Before I retired I often drove past “The Halfway House” on my way to or from work – but never called in. Recently I noticed that it was now called “The Firecrest” and decided to investigate. Apparently it dates as a hostelry from 1827 http://www.vintageinn.co.uk/thefirecrestwendover/ . George Cooper became the landlord in 1862 and remained there until his death in 1888, when his son-in-law, William Eldridge became landlord http://snipurl.com/cooperfamily . Despite the fact that the sign on the wall says “Inn Keeping with Tradition” it broke with tradition by changing its name in 1998.
