The Dominican Monastery of the Black Friars was founded here in 1230. The monks grew herbs for medicinal purposes. The small sculptures at the top of the wall show vessels, herbs and seeds. These represent the original and the current owners of the site - the Black Friars and Boots The Chemist. (Source: Information plaques on the wall).
