Coppiced area in Starvelarks Wood

This photo shows a newly coppiced area in Starvelarks Wood which is part of the Little Haven Nature Reserve managed by Essex Wildlife Trust See http://www.essexwt.org.uk/. This sweet chestnut plantation probably dates back to the 19th Century. You can see in the background areas that have been cut in previous years that show substantial re-growth. The felled timber is used to create fences in this and other of Trusts many reserves.
