Vallum Farm is so called as it stands on the course of the Vallum, a series of earthworks which run parallel to and somewhat to the south of Hadrian's Wall http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrians_Wall. The farm sets a good example of agricultural diversification. The tearoom is a popular point of call both with motorists driving along the Military Road (B6318) and walkers following the nearby Hadrian's Wall National Trail http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/hadrianswall/.
