The Government agreed in its ‘In Home Display Licence Conditions: Consultation response’ document published in February 2016 to introduce a derogation process for suppliers to apply to my rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State to undertake trials of innovative In Home Display alternatives with consumers when installing smart meters:

As set out in the consultation response, the Department is preparing guidance to help suppliers develop derogation proposals. This will include guidance on the use of a range of different research designs and methods, including randomised control trials and other approaches to generating robust evidence.
