PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Singapore: Human Rights (4 September 2015)
Question Asked
Asked by:
Mark Pritchard (Conservative)
Answer
At Singapore’s Universal Periodic Review before the UN Human Rights Council in 2011 the UK recommended that Singapore sign the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which includes a guarantee of the right to trial under its article 9. Singapore agreed to study the possibility of acceeding to Human Rights treaties that it has yet to join. The UK will continue to recommend to Singapore that it is in its best interests to address its security and law and order concerns in ways which guarantee that everyone has the right to a trial in court.
