Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps her Department is taking to help clean up contaminated land.

Answer

Under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, local authorities have a duty to inspect and identify contaminated land and require its remediation.

In addition, the Government’s recently published PFAS Plan sets out actions to improve our understanding of these substances, tackle their sources, and reduce ongoing exposure. This includes strengthening guidance for regulators and industry, helping them to identify, assess and manage PFAS contamination.

The Land Remediation Pathfinder Scheme, announced at autumn statement 2025, will also support a number of local authorities to deliver contaminated land remediation projects.
